When the well-known Arabian horse buyer Mr. W. J. Keates was on travel in India, he saw a snow white stallion that was a famous racer in this country. That stallion went by the name of Magistrate.
Magistrate was a powerful horse, 14hands high and had an impressive race horse career. He won all on the flat, over hurdles and in steeplechases on the principal Indian racecourses, including Calcutta, Bangalore or Hyderabad. Out of 40 races he finished twenty races victorous, ran second eleven times and was placed 3rd three times.
Magistrate was the property of Mr. Oscar Dignum who sold him to Mr. W. J. Keates. Magistrate went on his long way 'Down Under' in 1895 when he was 3-4 years old (his exact foal date is not reported). His arrival was worth reporting in the March issue of the Daily Telegraph that praised him as 'a phenomenally performed Arab pony stallion'.
Nothing is known about his offspring in India, but it is very unlikely -due to his race horse career - that he was never used. In Australia, however, he only sired two foals: a riding pony by the name of Coleby Squire and a purebred Arabian filly by the name of Saade ouf of the Straight Crabbet mare Sherifa.
Magistrate was later sold to he Hon. Samuel Winter-Cooke of Murndal, Victoria as an older horse. His exact date of death is not known.
