Lady Komtessa, a dark-chestnut mare foaled in 1994, represented an elegant blend of Russian and Spanish bloodlines. Bred by the Stöckle family of Osterhof Stud in Germany, she epitomized the stud’s long-standing focus on producing correct, substantial mares with proven dynastic value. Though she appeared only briefly in the show ring, Lady Komtessa left her mark primarily as a broodmare, contributing reliably to the continuation of a distinguished female family.
Her sire, Kubinec (Balaton × Kosmetika), had already begun weaving his legend across Europe. Bred at Tersk, his show record was exceptional. Kubinec earned titles including World Champion Stallion (1994), German National Champion Stallion and European Champion Stallion, later becoming a German Elite Stallion. Renowned as a sire of both halter and performance horses, he produced an impressive list of successful descendants such as FS Bengali, Davidoff, Koronec, El Nabila B, Mira Nair, Mystify, Sweet Sanadiva, Shakaar Ibn Sanadiva and Nil Khaznah. Kubinec’s ability to pass on charisma, structure and athleticism made his daughters particularly valued in breeding programs throughout Europe.
On her dam’s side, Lady Komtessa was a daughter out of Bookra (Hacio x Aljaima), a 1975 Pure Spanish mare descending from Arabka de Pompadour via Kadranka—a Polish mare imported to Spain in 1906 by Yeguada Militar. This dam line, shaped by generations of Spanish selection, was celebrated for producing strong-bodied mares with depth, substance, and excellent maternal qualities. Bookra herself produced at least one other highly successful offspring: Karoba, the European Filly Champion and German National Champion Filly of 1994, who was Lady Komtessa’s full sister. Lady Komtessa herself was rarely shown. She appeared publicly as a young mare at the Tulip Cup in 1997 and claimed the title of Reserve Champion Filly. This single highlight demonstrated her breed type and quality, but her owners chose to transition her early into broodmare duties—a role she fulfilled consistently for nearly two decades. In the German studbook, ten of her foals were recorded: seven colts and only three fillies. Some of her best-known offspring included: MC Cashmere by Kasachstan, GM Justin by WH Justice, GM Valeska by Vergil and BV Madeleine Moniscione by Ajman Moniscione.
Lady Komtessa’s legacy rested not on a decorated show career but rather on her role as a consistent and proven dam.
